In collaboration with environmental and installation artist and art educator, Michele Guieu, I have been exploring how collaborative art installations can encourage communities to address civic topics, such as environmental concerns. Together she and I facilitate discussions about data, story and local environmental concerns through scaffolded informal art-making activities.
When people think about the global scale of environmental problems, they may feel overwhelmed and unable to react. By focusing on the stories of ordinary experiences in local communities, this project attempted to engage people in conversations about data, story and their local environment. We invite communities to contribute stories. When they do, their story becomes a single data point added to a larger story that we, as a community, tell about our local natural environment, its land, water and air.
